Clinical trials in the field of paediatric oncology
The conduction of clinical trials is of paramount importance in improving survival in childhood cancer. For these reasons pediatric oncologists have learned that standard practice has to be integrated with clinical trials as a regular effort of their practice.
Differently from adult cancer patients, children with cancer are very often enrolled in clinical trials mainly sponsored by governmental authorities or by academic entities and much less by pharmaceutical companies.
Furthermore, peculiarities of childhood cancers should be strongly taken into consideration in trial development and lessons learned should be quickly incorporated into the future studies' design and in clinical practice.
