Specifically, it seeks to explore the potential of a Midwifery-Led Model of Care (MLMC) to address these disparities. Indeed, a midwife-led model of care offers numerous potential benefits for vulnerable low-risk pregnant women, including continuity of care, empowerment, cultural sensitivity, reduced medical interventions, and improved health outcomes. By prioritizing the individual needs and preferences of pregnant women, midwives play a crucial role in promoting maternal and infant health equity and reducing disparities in maternity care. The research is outlined through six interconnected work packages (WPs) in which a mixed-methods approach will be employed, including regional surveys, qualitative interviews, and participatory workshops. Data used are collected from maternity facilities, individual women, and healthcare professionals, and analyzed using statistical techniques and thematic analysis. Expected results include the development of tools for monitoring MLMC services, identification of factors influencing health outcomes, and insights into user and provider perspectives. By generating evidence-based insights and fostering collaborative engagement, this research initiative seeks to inform policy and practice for improving maternity care services in Lombardy and beyond, ultimately contributing to better health outcomes for women and infants and promoting health equity across diverse communities.
