Il Prof. Massimo Alessio, Head of Unit Division of Genetics and Cell Biology dell’IRCCS-Ospedale San Raffaele, Milano sarà ospite del Prof. Alberto Piperno per un seminario in lingua inglese nell’ambito del corso “Bench to Bedside” del corso di Laurea di Biotecnologie Mediche.
The multicopper oxidase ceruloplasmin (Cp) is a protein that oxidize ferrous iron into ferric iron, allowing iron to exit in the extracellular space and, thus, protecting cells against oxidative stress.
The role of Cp in iron homeostasis is evident in the genetic disease aceruloplasminemia, where mutations in the Cp gene lead to loss of ferroxidase activity resulting in iron accumulation in liver, pancreas and brain, in the latest fostering neurodegeneration.
Reduction in Cp ferroxidase activity promoted by the pro-oxidant environment in the cerebrospinal fluid of neurodegenerative diseases like in Alzheimer and Parkinson, has also been reported.
