Laura Silvestri: "Animal Models in Iron Research" - Invited Research Seminar

Martedì 27 Novembre 2018, Ore 9.00
Edificio U8-Aula 4, Via Cadore 48, 20900 Monza

La Dr.ssa Laura Silvestri, Project leader, Regulation of iron metabolism Unit deIl’IRCCS San Raffaele Scientific Institute
& Vita-Salute San Raffaele University di Milano, sarà ospite del Prof. Alberto Piperno per un seminario in lingua inglese nell’ambito del corso “Bench to Bedside” del corso di Laurea di Biotecnologie Mediche.

Murine models have made valuable contributions to our understanding of iron metabolism. Investigation of mice with inherited forms of anemia and iron overload has led to the discovery of novel proteins involved in iron homeostasis.

A growing number of murine models are being developed to investigate mitochondrial iron metabolism. Mouse strains are available for the major forms of hereditary hemochromatosis.

Findings in murine models support the concept that the pathogenesis of nearly all forms of hereditary hemochromatosis involves inappropriately low expression of hepcidin.
