Mindful Eating (ME) is a process-oriented approach that applies the core principles of mindfulness (paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and without judgment) to the act of eating. Unlike traditional prescriptive diets that rely on external rules and outcome-driven goals like weight loss, ME shifts the focus toward internal experiences, such as the sensory appreciation of food and the recognition of biological hunger and satiety cues.
This seminar will trace the evolution of the discipline, from its clinical roots in the 1970s to its specific application in treating Binge Eating Disorder (BED) and emotional eating since the 1990s. We will examine the scientific evidence supporting ME’s efficacy in reducing "autopilot" eating habits, modulating food reward systems, and improving interoception.
Furthermore, the presentation will explore the "7 Pillars of Mindful Eating", including non-judgment, patience, and trust, as well as practical tools for clinical practice, such as the integration of the Harvard "Healthy Plate" with the "Mindful Plate" approach.
While current data shows that ME is particularly effective for managing disordered eating behaviors, its impact on long-term weight management remains a complex area requiring further longitudinal research.
Ultimately, this seminar aims to demonstrate how incorporating mindful strategies into nutritional counseling can foster a more joyful and sustainable relationship with food, promoting overall physical and psychological well-being.
