Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a debilitating, chronic, insidious, and progressive neurodegenerative condition of old age, and has a long preclinical period of approximately 20 years.
Approximately 50 million people worldwide are living with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias, with numbers expected to reach 82 million by 2030 and 152 million by 2050.
Drug repurposing involves seeking new indications or molecular targets different from a drug’s known activity, pharmacological effects, or binding specificities. Given the increasing rates of drug failures in clinical trials, drug repositioning has emerged as a promising strategy to mitigate the risk of such failures. Drugs that are already FDA-approved to treat diseases other than dementia may hold a key to effectively treating Alzheimer’s and related disorders. Researchers are exploring multiple ways to repurpose drugs either alone or in combination with another therapeutic.
This lecture will focus on the progress made in drug repurposing for AD throughout the last decade, summarizing the suggested drug candidates and analyzing changes in the repurposing strategies used over time.
